Reas' software installations, such as Process 16 and Process 18, are defined by perpetually elusive moments, with the line as the primary form. The behavior of these lines is directed by the artist's instructions. "Using grayscale and static images, the system's formal attributes are reduced," Reas explains. "Introducing kinetic action or color representation increases complexity." Process 16 (Software 3), a live computer-generated piece, reveals a highly ordered space where the figure/ground relationship captures subtle behaviors within each frame.
