Mohr’s work bridges handmade and machine-calculated art. Before using computers, his early abstract works focused on process, language, and line texture. This drawing, from his Early Algorithms phase (1969-72), highlights the “formalism” of software, with logical, automatic image construction. Influenced by the Benson plotter, it links line to language and conceptual systems. Using FORTRAN, Mohr created a randomly generated alphabet with horizontal, vertical, and angled lines, square waves, and zig-zags, oriented left to right with minimal backtracking.
